00:07 Sonja Wood: I’m gonna give you some facts about Matric because people are… you are hear today at a Matric seminar. That’s what it was called. By the way, the word Matric was like a big magnet, it works.

[laughter]

00:18 Sonja: We could say, “we’re having a Matric seminar” and it’s like, “yes, I need to know about Matric.” Why is that? Because you’re wanting to be responsible people. And you have taken your children out of the system, as I shared earlier, and now you’re wanting to know, “what about this Matric that our government requires our children to have before they’ll acknowledge them or see that they’re educated.” But there are some facts about Matric that I wonder if people are aware of.

00:43 Sonja: Firms are hesitant to hire pupils coming out of grade 12 due to their lack of technical skills.

[pause]

00:51 Sonja: Students coming out of university are unable to cope with the demands of industry… Are unable to function at a higher level in tertiary education.

[pause]

01:02 Sonja: Matric isn’t the answer. So those are facts. I just put those there for you to educate yourselves, don’t just go with the flow… “Everybody has to get Matric.” Go and see what actually… what is that goal? If I’m heading towards a goal, what is it actually? I mean, Kathy shared earlier on… She headed towards the goal of Matric and what happened… It became, what did it become Kathy?

01:25 Kathy le Cordeur: I can’t remember the word I used, but don’t go that way.

[laughter]

01:32 Sonja: Fortunately we were very blessed in the fact that God kept our sites very set on Him because He gave us a work, a mandate, a work to do for Him. And put our eyes very set on Him and said, “now, obey Me, do this.” We didn’t know what we were doing. We didn’t know how our children were going to get their Matric, if they needed Matric… And what we did is we just followed after Him. And as a result of that, what we had is what I’ve told you and it’s not just our example of our young people but it is many, many other Oikos students that are now in their adult lives.
